Experiences of Irish Communities in Leicester area
Leicester, Sheffield and Manchester

Research into the experiences of Irish communities in Leicester, Sheffield and Manchester is currently being undertaken by Dr Angela Maye-Banbury and Dr Rionach Casey at Sheffield Hallam University. Thirty detailed life history interviews with men and women who migrated to England in the 1950s and 1960s have been completed so far, with more interviews planned in the months to come.

The study has revealed previously undocumented aspects of the Irish men and women’s experiences in both temporary and more permanent accommodation in the three English cities. New insights have also been provided on employment, leisure activities and family life.

The research has been supported by the Emerald Centre in Leicester (with Lynda Callaghan) and the Sheffield Irish Association.
